A Guided Body Scan Meditation Using Virtual Reality: A Phenomenological Exploration of Males’ Personal Experiences of Positive Affect

Feel like you’re carrying too much stress?

You are invited to participate in a study led by Sarah Barker, a twenty-year adult-learning educator and media psychology PhD student at Fielding Graduate University. This study explores your experiences and perceptions during a one-off, 25-minute guided body scan practice in virtual reality. The findings aim to inform strategies for enhancing wellness and resilience among a male population. Participation is voluntary and confidential.

In this study, you’ll use a virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) and wireless controllers to engage in virtual settings designed for relaxation. During the virtual experience, you will be guided through a body scan practice—a mindfulness exercise focusing on releasing tension and fostering relaxation.

Why Participate?

As individuals navigating complex personal and professional demands, your insights and experiences are invaluable. By participating in this study, you will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Inform Future Wellness Approaches: Your feedback may directly impact the development of innovative wellness practices that address stress and promote resilience for males.

  • Support Mental Health Awareness: This study aims to explore how a body scan practice, coupled with VR, can foster reduced anxiety and improved emotional wellbeing, contributing to greater awareness and support for men’s mental health.

  • Personal Growth and Development: Participation offers a meaningful way to contribute to progressive approaches in mental health, while also showcasing your engagement with innovative practices in personal and professional development.
